Red Villain with Trunk Mask from the Dieng Plateau

190

H071

This mask from the Dieng Plateau in Central Java is unique in that it has a protruding and curling trunk like nose as if it were an elephant. However, it has the fangs of a demon rather that the elephant's tusks and thus it could not be either the elephant god Ganesha nor could it be the hero elephant Gajah Seta.

The Dieng Plateau is where the oldest Javanese temples are located and the people of the plateau have a distinct culture different from the main stream Javanese. Typically Dieng children grow dreadlocks until they reach puberty to ward off ill.

This mask was used in ceremonial dances and was secured to the actor's face by the means of a piece of hide or rubber that would be bitten. Judging from the type of enamel used on this mask it was probably made and used in the 1950's.
