Menak Jinggo Villain Mask from East Java

175

H069

This is a well carved mask of Menak Jinggo, a king of Blambangan who revolted against Queen of Majapahit. In most areas of Java he is depicted as a villain with a red face and fangs and a flat nose but in Banyuwangi (where the kingdom of Blambangan once stood) Menak Jinggo is a hero and depicted as a handsome Prince. Judging from the type of enamel paint used this mask was probably carved and used in the 1950's-1960's.

According to legend Menak Jinggo revolted against Majapahit and no one from Majapahit could defeat him because he owned a club made from magical wesi kuning which would kill all Majapahit's champions.

The Queen of Majapahit was saved by Damarwulan a young horse hand who volunteered to fight Menak Jinggo. Damarwulan was very handsome and seduced Menak Jinggo's wives to give him the magical club and thus he managed to defeat Menak Jinggo. Later Dawarwulan became king of Majapahit when he married the Beautiful Queen of Gold and Purple (Ratu Ayu Kencana Wungu) who is known in history as Queen Tribhuwana Tunggadewi who reigned for one year between 1400-1401.
