Baron Sekeber golek puppet, Jepara

This puppet measures approximately 42cm from the tip of its cap o the end of its handle, with an extra 24 cm of sarong to conceal the puppeteer's hand. The sarong is old hand painted batik tulis and the enamel painted features of this puppet are still in relatively good condition.

This puppet was collected by Thierry Durieux in Jogja, Java, in the early 1980's and Thierry had it dressed and identified by a puppet master in Jogja. Baron Sekeber is a powerful Dutch villain king in Javanese legend. The way his headdress is portrayed is particularly interesting. Baron Sekeber is wearing a Java interpretation of a European military cap, complete with the older traditional iket turban underneath.
