Bali Thumbs Up Pecalang

This figure is a traditional door guard usually used to welcome guests in to a shop or a restaurant and more rarely, into people's homes. The figure is depicted wearing the checkered sarong of the panakawan or in Bali, the pecalang over his blue sarong which is neatly pleated down the middle. It stands around 76 cm tall and although the years of standing on the ground have eaten away some of the wood at the base of this statue, it can still stand straight on a flat surface. The statue has been carved out of a single piece of nangka wood and is unusual in that it is wearing its keris in the Java style rather than the Bali style where the keris is worn up against the shoulder blade rather than on the waist.
