Madura Bull Racing Ornament

The dry island of Madura which lies just off the East Java capital of Surabaya has a unique sport of bull-racing. The bulls race along a dry track with a jockey riding on a plough-frame behind them. The plough-frames are typically decorated with woodcarvings and bronze bells.

This piece of wood carving from a racing plough-frame is unique and interesting as it depicts what appear to be bunny rabbits and dragons and a European style crown. This suggests that the ornament was made and used during the period when the Dutch colonized Indonesia making this piece pre-1942. It measures approximately 43 cm long and is carved out of teak wood and painted with pigments and glue.
